ARM, Synopsys Join UMC to Ramp Foundry’s 14nm FinFET Process

TAIPEI — ARM and Synopsys have teamed up with United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), the world’s second-largest foundry, to make some of the first test chips with UMC’s 14nm FinFET technology.

UMC validated an ARM Cortex-A core on the foundry’s advanced process node that’s on track for customer tapeout by late 2015. UMC has demonstrated favorable 128mb SRAM yields on its 14nm FinFET process. The company will skip the 20nm technology node as it jumps to 14nm FinFET to catch up with competitors such as Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC).

In the meantime, UMC has expanded its 14nm FinFET work to include Synopsys DesignWare embedded memory and test solutions.

UMC’s validation of its 14nm FinFET process technology kickstarts the enablement process for the necessary IP ecosystem, including foundation IP and ARM processor physical design.

"We are highly encouraged by the test chip tapeout of a Cortex-A family core using UMC’s 14nm FinFET process," said Will Abbey, general manager, physical design group, ARM, in a press statement this week.

"Our expanded collaboration with UMC demonstrates our mutual goal to help designers incorporate DesignWare IP into their SoCs on UMC processes," said John Koeter, vice president of marketing for IP and prototyping at Synopsys, in another press statement.

"As UMC prepares to make available our 14nm FinFET process to customers, it is important that we build a strong design support foundation to enhance our overall 14nm platform offering," said Steve Wang, vice president of UMC’s IP and Design Support division, in a press release.

In addition to developing a competitive 14nm process, UMC is creating a support infrastructure to accelerate the design-in process for customers, Wang added. "Following our success with Synopsys on the previous 14-nanometer process qualification vehicle, this collaboration to bring Synopsys’ high-quality DesignWare IP to our most advanced node will help our mutual customers realize additional power, performance and cost benefits," he said.
