Due to advances in VoIP technology, the long-time promise of being able to replace or enhance the traditional PBX by combining voice and data services onto a single network can finally be realized. But, in order to do so, a low-cost telephony device capable of directly exchanging IP packets with the data network is required. Such a device is called an IP telephone, or IP phone.
